Vaginal Prolapse?

Post a new topicby BethBV on Mon Mar 31, 2008 11:49 pm

I am having a lot of pain and feel like a huge lump of tissue is bulging out of my vagina. It is a burning pain and almost feels like the "bulge" is rubbing on my clothes when I walk (I know, gross, hope this isn't TMI!). I also am having trouble when I unrinate . . . fine at first but then if burns at the end like a bladder infection (which it very well may be).

Over the weekend I thought it might be a yeast infection but I don't have the characteristic "cottage cheese" discharge. I also tried the 3-day yeast infection cream with no real change except that the pain goes away when I've been in bed a bit (right after I use the cream) and it seems much relieved in the morning. But by evening I can hardly walk due to the pain and the feeling that "something is falling out down there!"

I can actually push the "bulge" back up into my vagina and it does seem to relieve the pain somewhat but it isn't long before I'm falling out again! I'm a menopausal almost 47-year-old mother of one (8 year old) and had severe endometriosis (laparotomy 10 years ago to remove one ovary and had my uterus "lifted" during that surgery).

I'm guessing a trip to the gynecologist needs to be worked into my schedule this week. Could this be a prolapse?

Yes Beth this does sound like prolapse, probably the bladder. I would see your gyn since it sounds like you need some estrogen cream for comfort as well as to prepare the vagina for possible surgery. This surgery is very common and is done through the vagina so the recovery period should be a couple of weeks. There have been problems with this surgery in the past since there was a fairly high recurrance rate but with the newer meshes this risk is minimal.

This sounds exactly like prolapse. Probably of the bladder, but the gyn will be able to tell. With a prolapse, urination maybe be difficult and feel like burning even if there is no UTI.

I did see the gyn and it is a prolapse involving the bladder. She explained that the majority of the pain seemed to be coming from the urethra which is involved in the prolapse. The urine sample was inconclusive for an infection but I was prescribed 5 days of antibiotics and a unrinary tract specific analgesic. I have bright orange urine but I feel 99% better!

She was able to see and feel the prolapse but thinks it is minor at this point and may not require surgery but wants me to have a more complete exam with the urologist and let him make the final diagnosis and treatment plan.

Thanks for all your help!
