inept post-op care

Post a new topicby determined on Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:31 am

I had written a previous post as due to inept post-op care, a pack that I have learned was 6 feet long was left inside of me. This hospital staff error caused escalating pain for 2 days culminating in an episode where I became immobilized in the hospital bed and incoherent for hours. I finally had an extremely painful bowel movement and felt like I tore inside and looked down in shock to see something protruding out of me between my legs. Since I was not being assisted by nursing staff I pulled it out until it hurt--about one foot of bloody gauze. I was able to press the nurse call button and a nurse came in and pulled out the rest (approx. 6 feet in total). An incident report was filed by the nurse on her own volition.
At nine weeks post-op, I called my surgeon as things didn't feel right and he confirmed I had level one prolapse. I believe it may have occurred earlier since all involved in error were concerned about legal repercussions. I was dealing with the hospital error of not removing the packs ( I have written confirmation of this and the other errors they made including erroneous documentation of # of packs inserted and removed and inappropriate conduct of nurse who withdrew care and was abusive/negiligent). I had the physical pain of the hospital error as well as psychological issue of the treatment by the nurse who left me in isolation. I am convinced my surgical result was affected as the post-op instructions state to not become constipated or strain and I had pressure for 2 days culminating in a painful strain that caused some tearing. I had abysmal post-op care and have received a letter from the Director of Nursing with her "unreserved apologies". I will be proceeding with appropriate action. Bottom line is that post-op care (or lack thereof) may result in compromising your surgery not to mention the distress it causes.
