Post a new topicby livingwith on Tue May 13, 2008 8:58 am

I just experienced my first kidney stone yesterday on the 9th of May 2008. I am almost 40 years old. I have never had any serious health issues ever. I woke up yesterday morning and my lower left side of my back hurt pretty bad. But I thought I must have slept on my back wrong. I also started the day before my monthly visitor. Since I have endymetriosis ( spelt that wrong sorry) but lets just say really bad cramps during the first two days of a period each month. So I started to think thats what...Read the full article

I too, am from Iowa. I'm a 57 year old woman. I got my first experience with stones this year. I was fortunate and did not have to wait long to be seen in the ER. It all started in Feb with bladder spasms and blood in my urine. It hit me while on vacation in Punta Cana and I thank the lord the kidney pain was short lived. I think if I would have had a full blown attack, I would have died down there. Any way when we returned home it took about three more weeks to finally get a diagnosis of kidney stones in each kidney, about 5mm each. Ironically, the day after the CT, I had a full blown attack and landed in the ER. I got the usual IV and Toredal and morphine and finally, the pain subsided and I was sent home. The next night I returned to the ER for nausea and fever. I was given another IV for fluid and some anti nausea medication and within an hour, was sent home feeling much better. I was told to take Flomax and strain my urine and did so for the next three weeks. The urologist thought this would help me pass the stones on their own, but they had spurs on them and wouldn't budge. I had a ureteroscopy and he was able to catch them, but two days later I ended up in the hospital because I had vomiting, high fever and lots of pain. My diagnosis was E coli sepsis. It turned out, I was resistent to all of the different antibiotics they put me on prior to the hospitalization. I was in for 10 days on IV antibiotics. I was deathly ill but I did survive. It's been a month since I was released from the hospital and have not had any complications. I was told to go on a low oxilate diet, which means no chocolate, nuts, colas. You can go online and get the list. I still have a few stones in the kidneys, so I have been pretty good about avoiding the high oxilate foods. I never want to go through this again. I miss my chocolate, but the good thing is that I have lost about 8lbs.
Hang in there, I know how miserable they can be.
